Dear Responsible W.O.R.L.D. Traveler,

Thank you!

In this, our First Anniversary Issue of Responsible W.O.R.L.D. Traveler, I want to express my appreciation for your interest and support during this past year. Your response and feedback have been wonderfully encouraging, and I am deeply grateful.

I’m thrilled to announce that during the coming year, in addition to our monthly publication on responsible travel, we’ll be bringing you two outstanding, cultural travel adventures!

Both journeys are unique, life-changing travel opportunities. Both are based on the principles of responsible travel, of course, and blend the beauty of volunteer service with the excitement of leisure travel, as is our style:

Peace Through Travel’s

Agritourism Adventure on the Italian Riviera…

And Women’s Travels for Peace

Mission for Women’s Health in rural Senegal.

Although I hate to tease you, I’m not at liberty to reveal the delicious details until January! But next month we’ll fill you in with tantalizing specifics sure to warm your heart and fire your wanderlust.

In the meantime, as a year-end gift to you, I invite you to enjoy this month’s Feature Article, African Reflections, written in Paris on my journey home from Dakar to Washington D.C. in the spring of this year.

With my sincere wishes for a joyful 2009, I send you Love and Peace,

African Reflections

I miss Africa.

I miss ebony skin

and shocking white teeth

and black cherub faces,

and stark female beauty

and breathtaking men

the color of night.

I miss glistening hands

outstretched in ça va?,

eyes wrapping around me

and pulling me in

with a kiss.

I miss cackling laughter

and clacking palm hulls

and shrill voices chanting

and knees flying high

and hips swaying wide

and arms hurling life to the sky.

I miss ocher and crimson

and chartreuse and bleu,

and tall, regal headgear

and caftans on bikes,

and donkeys, and piggies,

and roosters, and goats,

and taxis throbbing with rhythm.

I miss waiting!

...where time is not fear,

but just life, and more life,

where the earth throbs her heat,

swirling golden dust clouds,

where trees scream their whisper,

stopping me in my tracks,

and the milky night sky makes me live forever.

I miss feeling my heart as wide as my eyes,

and stepping, not knowing,

and searching for words,

and feeling myself on the brink--

of being.

And I miss...

and I miss...

and I miss...

and I long

for

Africa.
